(Friday, December 26, 1947) — The Great Blizzard of 1947, a record-breaking snowfall that began on Christmas without prediction and brought the northeastern United States to a standstill, dumped 26.4 inches of snow today on Central Park in Manhattan in 16 hours.

The severe weather was blamed for some 80 deaths.
