(Tuesday, January 23, 1968, 1:45 p.m. PYT; during the Cold War) — North Korean patrol boats seized the United States Navy intelligence ship USS Pueblo off the North Korean port city of Wonsan today, charging her 83 crew crew members with being on a spying mission.

North Korea stated that the Pueblo deliberately entered their territorial waters 7.6 nautical miles away from Ryo Island. However, the United States maintains that the vessel was in international waters.
