(Wednesday, January 30, 1948, 10:00 a.m. CET) — Athletes from 28 nations marched today in the opening ceremonies of the 1948 Winter Olympics, officially known as the V Olympic Winter Games, in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

The Games were the first to be celebrated after World War II; it had been 12 years since the last Winter Games in 1936.

669 athletes (592 men, 77 women) competed in 22 events in four sports (9 disciplines) through Feb. 8, 1948.

Norway and Sweden won the most gold medals (4 each) and Norway, Sweden and Switzerland took home the most medals (10 each).
