(Thursday, February 8, 1968, approx. 10:30 p.m. EST; during the African-American civil rights movement (1954–1968)) — Three African-American college students (Samuel Hammond Jr., 18, Henry Smith, 19, and Delano Middleton, 17) were killed and 27 others were wounded tonight in a confrontation with highway patrolmen in Orangeburg, South Carolina, during a civil rights protest against a whites-only bowling alley.
