(Saturday, February 13, 1988, 1:00 p.m. MST) — Athletes from 57 nations marched today in the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XV Winter Olympiad, at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada (click here to watch the official film of the 1988 Winter Olympics).

Most events took place in Calgary while several skiing events were held in the mountain resorts of Nakiska and Canmore, west of the city.

1,423 athletes (1,122 men, 301 women) competed in 46 events in 6 sports (10 disciplines) through Feb. 28, 1988.

The Soviet Union won the most gold medals (11) and took home the most medals (29).
