(Thursday, February 15, 1968, afternoon GMT) — The Beatles’ long-planned trip to India finally got underway today as John Lennon and George Harrison, plus their wives Cynthia and Pattie, and Pattie’s sister Jenny, departed London Airport to Delhi, India.

The other two Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, would depart London for India on Feb. 18, 1968, arriving at Rishikesh on Feb. 20, 1968.

The Indian excursion was to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at his ashram in Rishikesh.
