Republicans nominate Harrison-Morton ticket 130 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Jun 25 1888)

(Monday, June 25, 1888) — U.S. Senator Benjamin Harrison of Indiana was nominated for President today at the 1888 Republican National Convention, meeting at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.

Harrison defeated U.S. Senator John Sherman of Ohio 544-118 on the eighth ballot.

During the evening session, former Congressman and Minister to France Levi P. Morton from New York was nominated Vice President on the first ballot, defeating Representative William Walter Phelps of New Jersey 591-119.

The Harrison-Morton ticket would oppose the Democratic ticket of incumbent President Grover Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman (nominated earlier in June 1888) in the United States presidential election, 1888.
