(Saturday, July 28, 1928) — Some 40,000 people jammed Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam, Netherlands, today as Prince Hendrik pronounced the 1928 Summer Olympics officially opened.

2,883 athletes (2,606 men, 277 women) from 46 nations competed in 109 events in 14 sports (20 disciplines) through Aug. 12, 1928.

The United States won the most gold medals (22) and took home the most medals (56).
