(Friday, August 12, 1898, 4:23 p.m. localar time; during the Spanish–American War) — The Spanish-American War effectively today with the signing in Washington of a Protocol of Peace between the United States and Spain.

Hostilities ended Aug. 13, 1898 when American forces captured the city of Manila from the Spanish in the Battle of Manila (American commanders were unaware that a peace protocol had been signed between Spain and the U.S. the previous day).

The United States gained Spain’s colonies of the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico in the treaty, and Cuba became a U.S. protectorate.
