Johnson, who had defeated former Governor Coke Stevenson Aug. 28, 1948 in the Democratic runoff primary for the U.S. Senate post vacated by Wilbert Lee O’Daniel by only 87 votes and then defeated Republican Jack Porter by a landslide in the general election on Nov. 2, 1948, was sworn in today as a U.S. Senator from Texas.
