(Friday, January 20, 2009, 12:05 p.m. EST) — Barack Obama, 47, was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States today on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice John Roberts administering the oath of office.

Obama succeeded President George W. Bush who was limited to two terms under the 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Moments before Obama was sworn in, Joe Biden, 66, of Delaware was inaugurated as the 47th U.S. Vice President, succeeding Vice President Dick Cheney.

Obama and Biden, Democrats, had defeated the Republican ticket of John McCain-Sarah Palin in the November 2008 general election.
