Truman, 64, was inaugurated today for a second term of office on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice Fred Vinson administering the oath of office in the first televised presidential inauguration.

Before Truman was sworn in, at 12:23 p.m. EST, Alben W. Barkley, 71, of Kentucky was inaugurated as the 35th U.S. Vice President. The vice presidency had been vacant since then-VP Truman was sworn in as president Apr. 12, 1945, upon the death of then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Truman and Barkley, Democrats, had defeated the Republican ticket of Thomas E. Dewey-Earl Warren in the November 1948 general election.
