(Monday, March 4, 1929, 1:07 p.m. local time) — Herbert Hoover, 51, was inaugurated as the 31st President of the United States today at the east portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice and former President William Howard Taft administering the oath of office.

This was the first time a presidential inauguration to be recorded by sound newsreels.

Hoover succeeded President Calvin Coolidge, 50, who had announced unexpectedly in Aug. 1927 that he would not run for re-election in 1928.

Charles Curtis, 69, was sworn-in as the 31st Vice President of the United States, succeeding Vice President Charles G. Dawes, 63.

Hoover and Curtis, Republicans, had defeated the Democratic ticket of Al Smith and Joseph T. Robinson in the Nov. 6, 1928, general election.
