(Monday, March 15, 1999, evening EST) — Former Beatle Paul McCartney was inducted as a solo artist tonight at the 14th annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City.

Accepting the award following an induction speech by Neil Young, Paul remarked: “This is a brilliant night for me but it’s sad too. I would have liked my baby [McCartney’s late wife, Linda] to be with me. She wanted this.”

Later, McCartney joined the evening’s all-star line-up to perform “Blue Suede Shoes,” “What’d I Say” and, as the finale, “Let It Be.”
