(Monday, March 4, 1901, approximately noon local time) — William McKinley, 58, was inaugurated today for a second term as the 25th president of the United States at the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice Melville Fuller administering the oath of office.

Former Governor Theodore Roosevelt, 42, of New York was inaugurated as the 25th vice president of the United States. The office had been vacant since the death of Vice President Garret Hobart on Nov 21, 1899.

McKinley and Roosevelt, both Republicans, had defeated the Democratic ticket of former U.S. Representative William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska and former U.S. Vice President Adlai Stevenson I in the 1900 presidential election.
