(Monday, September 8, 1941) — Land encirclement of Leningrad, a major industrial center now known as Saint Petersburg, was completed today when German forces reached the shores of Lake Ladoga, beginning the 872-day siege of the USSR’s second-largest city in the Eastern Front theatre of World War II.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts made its public debut today with a gala opening performance featuring the world premiere of a Requiem mass honoring U.S. President John F. Kennedy, a work commissioned from the legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.

(Wednesday, September 8, 1971) — John Lennon said today his second wife Yoko Ono didn’t break up the British rock group The Beatles, but if she had “she should get credit for all the nice music we’ve all made since we broke up.”

Lennon appeared with his wife in a two-hour taping with television interviewer Dick Cavett today at ABC Studio in New York. Ninety minutes of the conversation will be shown on Cavett’s late-night show Sept. 21.
