U.S. declares war on Germany, Italy 70 years ago this hour (1941)

(Thursday, December 11, 1941, 3:05 p.m. EST) — Germany and Italy declared war on the United States today, following America’s declaration of war against Japan on Monday in the wake of Sunday’s attack on Pearl Harbor.

The United States, in turn, declared war on Germany and Italy, with President Roosevelt signing the declarations at 3:05 p.m. EST.

Former Nazi Adolf Eichmann guilty on all 15 counts 50 years ago today (1961)

(Monday, December 11, 1961) — Israel convicted Adolf Eichmann of “unsurpassed” crimes against the Jews today and said his role in the Nazi pogrom would be remembered “until the end of time.”

The special three-man tribunal, which for four months tried the 55-year-old Gestapo lieutenant colonel, handed down its judgment which may bring him death on the gallows when he sentenced later this week.
