British seize Gandhi again for defiance 80 years ago today (1932)

(Monday, January 4, 1932) — Mahatma Gandhi, the pre-eminent political and ideological leader of India during the Indian independence movement, was arrested early today for the second time within a year and a half, and Nationalist India once more girded itself for a non-violent war on Great Britain.

He was arrested as he was sleeping on the stone floor of his tattered tent atop one of Bombay’s tenements.
