Lennon, Carnes take top Grammy awards 30 years ago tonight (1982)

(Wednesday, February 24, 1982, 9:00 p.m. EST)Double Fantasy, the album by the late John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono, and Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes’ scratchy voiced single, won top honors tonight at the 24th Grammy Awards at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Former President Theodore Roosevelt announces he’ll run again 100 years ago tonight (1912)

(Saturday, February 24, 1912) — Former President Theodore Roosevelt announced tonight (in the form of a written reply to seven GOP governors asking him to run) that he would “accept the nomination for president if it is tendered me,” directly challenging his successor, President William H. Taft, for the Republican presidential nomination.
