‘Diner’ opens in U.S. theaters 30 years ago today (1982)

(Friday, March 5, 1982)Diner, a comedy-drama film about a group of male high school friends, now in their twenties, who reunite for the wedding of one of their group, opened today in U.S. theaters.

Directed by Barry Levinson, the film starred Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, Timothy Daly, Ellen Barkin, Paul Reiser and Claudia Cron.

’49th Parallel’ premieres in New York 70 years ago tonight (1942)

(Thursday, March 5, 1942)49th Parallel, a film about a stranded German U-boat crew that tries to evade capture in Canada during World War II, premiered tonight in New York (it had already premiered in London on Oct. 8, 1941).

Directed by Michael Powell, the film stars Leslie Howard, Laurence Olivier and Raymond Massey.
