(Wednesday, August 1, 1973)American Graffiti, a coming of age film about a couple of high school grads who spend one final night cruising the strip with their buddies before they go off to college, premiered today in the U.S.

Directed by George Lucas, the film also starred Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Cindy Williams and Wolfman Jack.

(Monday, August 2, 1943, 2:00 am local time; part of the Pacific Theater of World War II) — U.S. Navy boat PT-109, commanded by Lt. (jg) John F. Kennedy, 26, sank today after being rammed this morning by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri off the Solomon Islands. Two crew members were killed; Kennedy led the survivors to nearby islands until they could be rescued.
