(Tuesday, September 11, 1973) — Chilean President Salvador Allende, the world’s first democratically-elected Marxist head of state, committed suicide today as he was overthrown in a military coup at the presidential palace during a violent coup.

General Augusto Pinochet would head a U.S.-backed military junta that governed Chile for the next 16 years.
