‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ by The Beatles peaks at #1 in USA 50 years ago today (Feb 1 1964)

(Saturday, February 1, 1964)“I Want to Hold Your Hand” by The Beatles peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart for seven consecutive weeks (February 1/8/15/22/29, March 7/14, 1964). It was the group’s first of a record (that still stands 50 years later) of 20 number one hits on the chart (1964-1970). In 2004, it was ranked number 16 on Rolling Stone‘s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Report: Indiana’s governor declares ‘Louie Louie’ pornographic 50 years ago today (Feb 1 1964)

(Saturday, February 1, 1964) — Indiana Governor Matthew E. Welsh recently declared the song “Louie, Louie” by the Kingsmen pornographic, according to today’s edition of Billboard music magazine, even though the average listener wasn’t able to decipher the lyrics. He requested that the Indiana Broadcasters Association ban the record.
