Martin Luther King Jr. awarded Nobel Peace Prize 50 years ago today (Oct 14 1964)

(Wednesday, October 14, 1964) — Civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. was today named the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for leading non-violent resistance to end racial prejudice in the United States.

King, “thoroughly exhausted” from a heavy schedule of speaking engagements and a trip to Europe, was in a hospital bed in Atlanta today when he learned he had won the award.

(Wednesday, October 14, 1964) — Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev was deposed as leader of the Soviet Union today when the Presidium and the Central Committee each voted to accept Khrushchev’s “voluntary” retirement from his offices.

It was announced the following day that he’d been succeeded by Leonid Brezhnev as first secretary and by Alexei Kosygin as premier.
