(Friday, November 10, 1944, 8:55 a.m. PGT; during World War II) — The ammunition ship USS Mount Hood (AE-11) exploded today while moored at the Manus Naval Base in the Admiralty Islands in the South Pacific. The blast annihilated the Mount Hood and damaged nearby vessels, leaving 45 confirmed dead and 327 missing and presumed dead.

(Friday, November 9, 1984) — A Nightmare on Elm Street, a supernatural slasher horror film about a group of teenagers who are terrorized by “Freddy Krueger,” an evil being from another world who gets to his victims by entering their dreams and killing them, opened nationwide today in U.S. theaters.
Directed by Wes Craven, the film starred John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Nick Corri, Johnny Depp and Robert Englund.
