(Monday, June 14, 1965, 7:00-10:30 p.m. BST) — The Beatles continued production of their fifth studio album Help! this evening at EMI Studio 2 in London, recording two takes of “Yesterday,” what would become one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music (an additional vocal track by McCartney and a string quartet were overdubbed onto take 2 on June 17, 1965).

(Monday, June 14, 1965)Beatles VI, the group’s sixth album on Capitol Records (excluding The Beatles’ Story) was released today in the U.S.

Beatles VI included two tracks recorded specifically for the North American market, six tracks from the Beatles for Sale British album left off the American LP Beatles ’65, “Yes It Is,” the B-side to the single “Ticket to Ride” and two other tracks from the forthcoming UK release of Help! TWA Flight 847 hijacked on flight from Athens 30 years ago this hour (June 14 1985)

(Friday, June 14, 1985, shortly after 10:10 a.m. EEST) — Trans World Airlines Flight 847 was hijacked today by members of Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad shortly after take off from Athens with 104 Americans and 49 other people aboard.

The pilots were forced to fly to Beirut, to Algiers and then back to Beirut, where one passenger, U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem, was shot to death and his body was thrown onto the tarmac.

The hijackers were seeking the release of 700 Shi’ite Muslims from Israeli custody.
