‘Jaws’ opens across North America 40 years ago today (June 20 1975)

(Friday, June 20, 1975)Jaws, a thriller film about the sheriff of an island town who takes to the seas when a bloodthirsty shark invades the local waters, opened today across North America on 464 screens, including 409 in the United States.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film starred Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss.

The prototypical summer blockbuster, its release is regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history.
