(Friday, August 10, 1945; 2:00 a.m. JST, during World War II) — Presiding over a special meeting of the War Council, Japanese Emperor Hirohito decided this morning that “continuing the war can only mean destruction for the nation and prolongation of bloodshed and cruelty in the world. I cannot bear to see my innocent people suffer any longer,” and that Japan should surrender.

(Monday, August 9, 1965) — Three of the four Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison) attended a recording session of Lennon-McCartney’s “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” by the folk group The Silkie today at IBC Studios in central London, with McCartney (on guitar) and Harrison (on tambourine) performing on the track and Lennon in the control room.

Portsmouth Peace Conference begins in Kittery, Maine 110 years ago today (Aug 9 1905)

(Wednesday, August 9, 1905) — Japanese and Russian delegations convened the Portsmouth Peace Conference today at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, (by invitation of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt) to negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese War. A total of twelve sessions were held between Aug. 9-30.
