‘The Sound of Silence’ by Simon & Garfunkel peaks at #1 in USA 50 years ago today (Jan 1 1966)

(Saturday, January 1, 1966, New Year’s Day)“The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for two non-consecutive weeks (Jan. 1/29, 1966).

It was the duo’s first of three number one hits on the chart (1966-1970) and ranked #156 on Rolling Stone‘s 2004 list “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”
