(Tuesday, May 31, 1966)The Monkees television series, a situation comedy that follows the adventures of four young men trying to make a name for themselves as rock ‘n roll singers (starring Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz. Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork), began production today in Malibu Canyon, California, as filming began of the first episode (after the pilot), titled “Don’t Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth” (which would air Oct. 31, 1966).

(Wednesday May 31, 1916, 3:48 p.m. CEST; during World War I) — The Battle of Jutland, a naval battle fought by the British Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet against the Imperial German Navy’s High Seas Fleet, began today in the North Sea, near the coast of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula.

The battle ended the next morning with a strategic British victory. There was no clear-cut victor, although the British suffered heavier losses.

It carried a camera that will send thousands of pictures of the moon’s surface back to earth, if all does well.
