(Tuesday, August 17, 1982) — The first commercially produced compact discs, featuring a recording of ABBA’s The Visitors, were pressed today at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, just outside of Hanover, Germany.

The CD, a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings, was then released in October 1982 and branded as Digital Audio Compact Disc.
