(Tuesday, November 4, 1952, during the 1952 United States presidential election) — Republican General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower of New York was elected the 34th president of the United States today, defeating Democratic Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois.

Eisenhower and his running mate, U.S. Sen. Richard M. Nixon of California, received 55.2 percent of the popular vote compared to 44.3 percent for Stevenson and his running mate, U.S. Sen. John J. Sparkman of Alabama.

The Republican ticket was officially elected on Dec. 15, 1952, when members of the Electoral College met and cast 442 votes for Eisenhower and Nixon and 89 votes for Stevenson and Sparkman. This election was the first since 1928 in which the Republican presidential nominee was elected.
