President Roosevelt orders full ‘gas’ rationing 70 years ago tonight (1942)

(Thursday, November 26, 1942, Thanksgiving Day during World War II) — U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt served notice tonight that the government would begin the nationwide rationing of gasoline to conserve rubber on Dec. 1, as scheduled.

“We must do everything within our power,” the president stated, “to see that the program starts Dec. 1, because victory must not be delayed through failure to support our fighting forces.”
