(Saturday, November 28, 1942, 10:15 p.m., local time) — Nearly 500 people died in a fire tonight that destroyed the Cocoanut Grove, Boston’s premier nightclub.

It was the second-worst single-building fire in American history; only the 1903 Iroquois Theatre fire in Chicago had a higher death toll, of 602.
