President George Washington, VP John Adams sworn in for second terms in Philadelphia 230 years ago this hour #OnThisDay #OTD (Mar 4 1793)

(Monday, March 4, 1793, noon local time) — President George Washington of Virginia took the oath of office today for a second term as the first president of the United States in the Senate Chamber of Congress Hall in Philadelphia.

John Adams of Massachusetts was also sworn in for a second term as the first vice president of the United States.

Washington was re-elected unanimously in the 1792 election, winning all 132 votes in the Electoral College. Adams had defeated George Clinton by 77 to 50 votes.

Washington’s second inaugural address remains the shortest ever delivered, at just 135 words. It was the first to take place in the “City of Brotherly Love” and also the first on the date fixed by the Continental Congress for the inauguration, March 4.
