(Thursday, March 1, 1973)The Dark Side of the Moon by the English rock band Pink Floyd, among the most critically acclaimed albums and often features in professional listings of the greatest albums, was released today (Mar. 16, 1973, in the UK).

The album was developed during live performances, and the band performed an early version several months before the recording began.

It was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle and partly deal with the mental health problems of the former band member Syd Barrett, who departed the group in 1968.

Rolling Stone ranked it number 43 on its 2003 and 2012 lists of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” and number 55 in its 2020 list, Pink Floyd’s highest placement.
