(Tuesday, September 18, 1973) — Ex-Beatle John Lennon moved out of the Dakota apartment in New York today and headed off to Los Angeles to begin an 18-month separation from wife Yoko Ono.

In 1980, he recalled this fateful day: “Yoko kicked me out! I didn’t go off on a ‘I’m gonna be a rock and roll bachelor’ thing. She literally said, ‘Get out!’ I said ‘OK, OK, I’m going … bachelor free.’ I’ve been married all my life and I thought whoooo -whoooo-yippee! But it was god awful!”

Lennon’s new constant companion was Ono’s secretary May Pang.
