Battle of Chickamauga ends with Confederate victory, 34,624 combined casualties 150 years ago this hour (1863)

(Sunday, September 20, 1863, 4:30 p.m. local time; in the Western Theater of the American Civil War) — The Confederate Army won the Battle of Chickamauga today after Union Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans, misinformed that he had a gap in his line, accidentally created an actual gap, directly in the path of an eight-brigade assault on a narrow front by Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet.

The first major battle of the war that was fought in Georgia (named for Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia), the combined 34,624 casualties was after Gettysburg, the second-highest of the war overall.
