(Wednesday, December 18, 1963) — The Pink Panther, a comedy film about bumbling French police detective who tries to stop a notorious jewel thief from nabbing a princess’ diamond, was released today in Italy.

It is the first installment in The Pink Panther franchise, featuring an inept French police detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau.

Directed by Blake Edwards, the first Pink Panther film starred David Niven, Peter Sellers, Robert Wagner, Capucine and Claudia Cardinale.
