(Wednesday, March 13, 1974, evening PDT) — One day after being ejected from the Troubadour Club for heckling during a performance by the comedy duo The Smothers Brothers, a clean and sober looking John Lennon attended the American Film Institute tribute dinner to legendary film actor James Cagney tonight at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

Lennon is briefly seen at the event, which was nationally televised March 18, 1974, on CBS, sitting at the back of the venue wearing a bow tie (at 25:37 into the embedded video as actor Allen Jenkins responds to his acknowledgement by singer Frank Sinatra).

At one point during the evening, Lennon meets up with Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones.
