(Thursday, June 12, 1924) — President Calvin Coolidge of Massachusetts was nominated for a full second term today at the 1924 Republican National Convention meeting at Public Auditorium in Cleveland, defeating U.S. Senator Robert M. La Follette, Sr. of Wisconsin 1065-34 on the first ballot.

Coolidge had become president 10 months ago upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding.

The convention nominated Former Illinois Governor Frank O. Lowden for vice president on the second ballot, but he declined the nomination.

The convention then selected White House Budget Director Charles Dawes of Illinois on the third ballot over Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover of California 682.5-234.5.

The Coolidge-Dawes ticket would oppose the Democratic ticket of John W. Davis-Charles W. Bryan (nominated in July 1924) in the 1924 general election.
