(Wednesday, July 9, 1924, 3:38 p.m. EDT) — Former Ambassador to the United Kingdom John W. Davis of West Virginia was nominated for president today at the 1924 Democratic National Convention meeting at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Davis won the nomination as a compromise candidate following a virtual war of attrition between front-runners William Gibbs McAdoo and Al Smith.

The convention nominated Charles W. Bryan, former Governor of Nebraska, on a single ballot.

The Davis-Bryan ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of President Calvin Coolidge-Charles G. Dawes (nominated in June 1924) in the 1924 general election.
