(Sunday, September 17, 1944, 12:30 p.m. CEST; during the Operation Market Garden, part of the Allied advance from Paris to the Rhine during World War II) — Thousands of Allied airborne troops landed behind German lines in the Netherlands today in the wake of a thunderous bombing by American and British heavy bombers, and armored divisions of the British Second Army raced into the Netherlands to join the airborne units in a coordinated effort to turn the right flank of the Westwall.

After initial success, the Allies were beaten back by the Germans.
