‘Miami Vice’ series debuts on NBC-TV 30 years ago this hour (Sep 16 1964)

(Sunday, September 16, 1964, 9:00 p.m. EDT)Miami Vice, a crime drama about two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami, debuted tonight as a regular television series on NBC as a two-hour pilot (regular one-hour episodes would commence on Sept. 28, 1984).

It starred Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, Saundra Santiago, Michael Talbott, John Diehl, Olivia Brown, Gregory Sierra and Edward James Olmos.

Unlike standard police procedurals, the show drew heavily upon 1980s new wave culture and music. The show became noted for its heavy integration of music and visual effects to tell a story.
