(Tuesday, November 4, 1884, during the 1884 presidential campaign) — Democratic Governor Grover Cleveland of New York was elected President of the United States today, defeating Republican challenger former Secretary of State, former Senator and former House Speaker James G. Blaine of Maine.

Cleveland and his running mate, former Governor Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana, received 48.9% of the national popular vote. Blaine and his running mate, Senator John A. Logan of Illinois, received 48.3%.

The 1884 popular vote results translated into an Electoral College victory of 219-182 for Cleveland-Hendricks, who would be sworn in to a four-year term on March 4, 1885.
