(Wednesday, February 4, 1976, 03:01:43 CST/09:01:43 UTC) — More than 23,000 people died today when a severe earthquake struck Guatemala with a magnitude of 7.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Approximately 76,000 were injured, and many thousands left homeless. Some of areas went without electricity and communications for days.
