(Thursday, June 29, 1876) — Governor Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana was almost unanimously nominated vice president today on the first ballot at the 1876 Democratic National Convention meeting at the Merchants Exchange Building in St. Louis.

The convention nominated Hendricks by a 730-8 vote margin (the 8 votes opposed were “blank”) to join the ticket headed by Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York (who was nominated the previous day).

The Tilden-Hendricks Democratic ticket would oppose Republicans of Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler in the United States presidential election, 1876.
