(Monday, August 1, 1966, 11:48 a.m.-1:24 p.m. CDT) — Charles Joseph Whitman, 25, went on a shooting rampage today at the University of Texas in Austin, killing 14 people and wounding 32 others from atop the University of Texas at Austin Main Building tower overlooking the campus.

Whitman, who had also slain his wife and mother hours earlier, was gunned down by police. An autopsy showed later that Whitman had a brain tumor.
