(Saturday, July 27, 1996, 1:20 a.m. EDT; during the 1996 Summer Olympics) — Terror struck the Atlanta Olympics as a pipe bomb spiked with nails and screws exploded early this morning at Centennial Olympic Park, directly killing one person (another person later died of a heart attack) and injuring 111.

It was the first of four bombings committed by anti-abortion, anti-gay extremist Eric Robert Rudolph.
