(Wednesday, March 27, 1957, 7:30-10:38 p.m. PST)Around the World in 80 Days, an American epic adventure-comedy film about a Victorian gentleman who bets that he can beat the world’s record for circling the globe, won five Oscars tonight at the 29th Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

George Stevens won Best Director for Giant, Yul Brynner won Best Actor for The King and I, Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress for Anastasia, Anthony Quinn won Best Supporting Actor for Lust for Life and Dorothy Malone won Best Supporting Actress for Written on the Wind.

The ceremonies were held at RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, California, and NBC Century Theatre in New York City with Jerry Lewis (Hollywood) and Celeste Holm (New York City) acting as co-hosts.
